Kool-Aid DyeFest

Over the course of 2 days, I dyed many (33) small hanks of yarn using 13 flavors of Kool-Aid (and combinations thereof).

This is my Kool-Aid Chronicle.
The raw materials: KnitPicks Wool of the Andes Natural. I made small 6g hanks and tied them loosely. In spite of the looseness, I found that around the ties the color was lighter.

My palette: 13 flavors of Kool-Aid. I measured each packet (all of them were different weights) so that I would know how to subdivide the powder to correspond to the hallmark 1 packet to 1 ounce of yarn.

Zap! I put 1 hank of yarn into a glass with 1 cup distilled water and the measured powder. Then it was microwave on high for 2.5 min, rest 2.5 min, and repeat 2 or 3 times. Three zaps was sufficient for single-strength color, but I needed four zaps for multiple-strengths.

Cool-down. After the microwave, I put the hanks into containers to cool completely. During this time, any dye that was not already absorbed would usually be absorbed. It really was amazing how all of the dye would be taken up into the yarn, leaving clear water behind!

Wash 'n' dry. When the hanks were cool, I washed and rinsed them thoroughly, then sqeezed excess water out, then hung to dry. Here are some hanks waiting to be hung. Looks yummy!

My thirteen colors, with their packets. For each color I dyed two hanks: one on single-strength (upper) and one on double-strength (lower). Single is as if you used one packet per ounce of yarn; double would be two packets per ounce.
