There are usually large directory maps of the local area on the street outside Tokyo subway and train stations. The maps are very helpful (especially when you snap a photo to take with you). ....and none of these maps were defaced with even so much as an advert or a sticker, let alone paint marker or zirconia scrawl.

As many people live in the Tokyo metro area as in the Los Angeles metro area (including Riverside & SanBdo), but the average population density of the entire Tokyo area is almost twice that of the City of LA. Living in Tokyo feels a bit like flying coach-class. Everyone in Tokyo learns to live as part of a crowd. For example, here's a small slice of Tsukiji market on a Saturday morning.
